How much does background music for business cost?
A clear breakdown of what in-venue music actually costs — the service, the licensing, and how to budget.
Pricing for in-venue music can feel confusing because there are two separate costs. Here’s how to think about it so there are no surprises.
1) The music service
A business music subscription typically charges per zone (each independent audio stream — a room or area). Across the market, plans commonly range from around €15 to €55 per zone per month, depending on features. MUSICDJ starts with a free Web Player and simple per-zone plans, and bundles signage, a QR menu and a jukebox so you’re not paying three vendors.
2) Public-performance licensing
Separately, your venue pays a public-performance fee to your country’s collecting society. This is a legal obligation independent of which music provider you use, and it’s usually calculated by floor area, capacity or venue type. Examples:
- Germany (GEMA + GVL): a small café often lands around €300–400/year.
- Italy (SIAE + SCF): two separate bills by area and number of devices.
- Serbia (SOKOJ + OFPS), Croatia (one ZAMP bill), France (SACEM + SPRE): rates vary — check the official tariff.
Important: no business music service removes this fee — be wary of anyone promising “no royalties”. We help you find and register with the right organisation.
How to budget
Add the per-zone service cost to your local performance fee. For a single-zone café that’s often a modest monthly figure plus an annual society fee. Multi-zone venues scale per zone — which is why an all-in-one platform that also handles your menus and screens is usually better value.
